TRANSLATION SHIFTS AND EQUIVALENCE STRATEGY PRODUCED BY INSTAGRAM MACHINE TRANSLATION

The fast advancement of technology forces people to use it to simplify their lives. In the translation field, besides human translator, there is also machine translator used to help people in transferring the meaning of a text from source language (SL) to target language (TL). Along with the development of technology and social media, Instagram as one of the most famous social media platforms launched Instagram Machine Translation in 2016 that can help people to translate the captions and comments posted by the users. This study was conducted to identify the types of translation shift and the types of translation equivalence performed by Instagram machine translation in translating the captions on @instagram account from English to Indonesian. By using descriptive qualitative method to reach the goals of the study, the appropriate data were obtained. The data were analyzed based on the translation shifts theory from Catford (1965) and translation equivalence by Nida (1964). The findings showed that all types of Catford’s translation shifts were found in the translation process and the most common type was structure shift. It was also found that Instagram machine translation was successful in transferring the message from SL to TL equivalently. The Effects of English Songs in Learning Vocabulary for Young Learners

This research is aimed to proof that English songs can be used as interesting tools to teach English for kids, especially for teaching vocabulary. As mentioned by Millington (2011), the crucial effect of using songs is to help learners to be more enjoyable in learning. A song is something which is closed to the kids and singing is an activity which is fun for them. Besides, song lyrics consist of simple daily words. Teaching English using songs can be used as an alternative tool because kids learn those words unconsciously. This research was conducted in Poncokusumo, a village located in Malang, Jawa Timur. The participants were seven elementary school students from two different schools. They were eight until ten years old. One student was from State Elementary School and six students were from private elementary school. The reason of choosing this village is because there was no research using English songs conducted there. Another reason is because the learners’ and parents’ knowledge about English songs is limited. Compared to a year ago, the internet connection is much better today, but they do not have any references to access the English songs from the internet, especially to use them as tools for learning English. Some steps were done by giving pretest, treatment, posttest, and conducting interview. Pretest was done to know the participants’ knowledge related to the songs that were used. Then, the treatment was done by teaching those participants using songs that were chosen. In this step, the song lyrics used had simple words and easy to remember. After that, the posttest was done to get the results of the treatment. In the last step, one-by-one interview was conducted to gain some results related to the learners’ responses toward the use of songs in learning English vocabulary

Respons Pertumbuhan Dan Produksi Dua Varietas Okra (Abelmoschus Esculantus L. Moench) Terhadap Pemberian Berbagai Jenis Pupuk Organik: Growth response and production of two lady finger varieties by various type of organic fertilizers

This research was conducted in Pembangunan street Subdistrict Medan Selayang, began from May to September 2016. This research used factorial randomized block design with two factors. The first factor was lady finger varieties were Red burgundy and Garibar. The second factor was application of organic fertilizer with four treatment (without organis fertilizer, compost 22,5g/10kg soil, vermicompost 30g/10kg soil, and chicken manure 75g/10kg soil). Garibar variety different on plant length, number of leaves, number of fruit, and fruit weight with Red burgundy. Chicken manure treatment can increase plant length, number of leaves, number of fruit, and fruit weight. Interaction between varieties and organic fertilizer treatment can increase plant length. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di lahan masyarakat jalan pembangunan kecamatan Medan Selayang dengan ketinggian tempat ± 25 meter di atas permukaan laut. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada bulan Mei sampai dengan September 2016, menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok dengan 2 faktor perlakuan. Faktor pertama adalah varietas dengan 2 jenis yaitu Red burgundy dan Garibar. Faktor kedua yaitu pemberian pupuk organik dengan 4 jenis yaitu tanpa pupuk organik, kompos (22,5g/10kg tanah), pupuk kascing (30g/10kg tanah), dan pupuk kandang ayam (75g/10kg tanah). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa varietas Garibar berbeda dalam tinggi tanaman, jumlah daun, jumlah buah per tanaman, dan bobot buah per tanaman dengan Red burgundy. Pemberian pukan ayam meningkatkan tinggi tanaman, jumlah daun, jumlah buah per tanaman dan bobot buah per tanaman. Interaksi antara perlakuan varietas dengan pemberian pupuk organik meningkatkan tinggi tanaman

A STUDY ON NETSPEAK USED BY INDONESIAN ADULTS ON A WHATSAPP CHAT GROUP

AbstractThe use of internet language or netspeak in people’s daily communication is such a common phenomenon that becomes one of the most interesting topics to be researched. Its common types such as the use of nonstandard punctuation, using abbreviation, emoticons, and so on are problematic for some people: it is confusing for those who are not familiar and useful for those who are familiar with. Regarding to that fact, this study is conducted to examine the types of netspeak and the reasons of 6 Indonesian adults in using netspeak on WhatsApp chat group communication. The participants consist of 5 females and 1 male who are between 27-35 years old.This research is analyzed by using qualitative method and the framework from Riley (2013). It consists of two sources of data from participants’ written netspeak on WhatsApp chatgroup and their interview data transcripts.Results of the written netspeak on WhatsApp chatgroup show that there are some similar characteristics of netspeak that can be put together as certain type of netspeak by Riley (2013). Literasi Etika Pergaulan Remaja melalui Karya Fiksi bagi Siswa-Siswi di TBM Kolong, Ciputat

Kegiatan pelayanan kepada mayarakat merupakan kegiatan penerapan ilmu dalam memenuhi tuntutan dinamika perkembangan dan kemajuan di berbagai aspek kehidupan mayarakat yang dilakukan oleh civitas akademika. Berdasarkan observasi terhadap aktivitas Taman Bacaan Masyarakat di bawah jembatan Ciputat yang berada di jalan Ciputat, Tangerang Selatan, kelompok PkM kami melakukan sebuah kegiatan yang memiliki dampak bagi anak-anak yang menjadi pengunjung setia taman bacaan tersebut tentang pentingnya pemahaman dan peningkatan etika pergaulan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Permasalahan-permasalahan seputar minimnya etika pergaulan di kalangan remaja kerap terjadi di masyarakat. Hal-hal tersebut apabila tidak segera ditangani dikhawatirkan akan menjadi masalah besar terhadap karakter bangsa di masa depan. Solusi yang ditawarkan dalam kegiatan PKM untuk aspek pendidikan anak-anak pengunjung TBM Ciputat adalah dengan melalui kegiatan literasi mengingat bahwa hal tersebut juga sejalan dengan bidang keilmuan Fakultas Sastra, Program Studi Sastra Inggris. Literasi menjadi basis utama program PkM kali ini, yang disesuaikan dengan etika pergaulan pada kelompok usia remaja (SMP)

INDONESIAN STUDENTS’ AND TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION OF GOOD EFL TEACHER’S CHARACTERISTICS

This research is aimed at knowing the results from the students’ perception regarding the good characteristics teacher whether English teachers have fulfilled the good teacher characteristic and also knowing the teacher’s view on the characteristics of being good EFL teacher. This research also aims at providing anyone concerned with ELF learning and teaching process, with a much better view so that there will be a more understanding toward the ideal figure that should be possessed by the teacher. This  research  is  conducted  in  into  a  few  subjects  ( 7 EFL  teacher  and approximately 80 students) in a certain time or period thus the result will just represent the point of view of the students and their teacher in that specific time. Since survey research requires large amount of data. The research was conducted in Global Institute and Polytechnic LP3I tangerang. The researchers use two questionnaire to gain the data. This research has purpose  that teachers could know their students perception and opinions about themselves. The result shows that teachers must have four aspects, they are technical knowledge, pedagogical skills, personal and interpersonal skills.
